Rising Gas Prices in the UK
This Field Note documents an editorial assignment for Helsingin Sanomat, produced in response to rising gas prices in the UK and their impact on domestic life.
The portrait focused on a household experiencing the effects of increased living costs at a moment when access and movement were restricted. Due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, the subject could not leave the home, and the assignment was photographed entirely from outside, with physical distance maintained throughout.
Rather than attempting to recreate an interior scene, the images were made at the threshold of the home — through windows and at the entrance — using framing and reflection to suggest presence without intrusion. This approach allowed the photographs to reference domestic space while respecting the constraints of the situation.
The resulting images invite the viewer into a private environment from a deliberate distance, reinforcing the themes of separation, containment, and visibility that shaped both the assignment and the wider social context at the time. The work supports the accompanying article by grounding an abstract economic issue in a specific, lived experience.
