Elinoora & Samuli Sirviö

This Field Note documents an editorial portrait assignment for Helsingin Sanomat, featuring singer-songwriter Ellinoora, photographed in London alongside her producer and husband Samuli Sirviö during the production of her fourth album.

London was central to the narrative of the article, functioning both as a place of work and a source of creative inspiration. The decision to photograph within the London Underground was a deliberate reference to the visual iconography Ellinoora has consistently used across her music and public image over time. The Underground’s graphic language and recognisable environments provided a setting that felt directly connected to her artistic identity rather than illustrative of the article itself.

In addition to the Underground, portraits were made outdoors in front of Infinite Accumulation by Yayoi Kusama. The sculpture offered a contrasting visual register — bold, playful, and immediately striking — introducing a moment of surprise within the shoot and giving Ellinoora a strong visual counterpoint to the subterranean setting.

Liverpool Street Station was selected deliberately, both for practical and editorial reasons, allowing the portraits to be made efficiently while situating the subjects within a recognisable and active part of the city. The approach prioritised presence and immediacy, allowing movement and environment to remain part of the frame without overpowering the subject.

Across the locations, the imagery balances iconography and intimacy. Rather than constructing a staged performance, the portraits position Ellinoora within environments that echo the themes of the article: London as escape, influence, and creative framework. The resulting photographs support the feature by situating the artist within the city that shapes her work, allowing place and presence to operate together without overt staging.
